Jewish Band Paying Too High a Price for Standing with Israel

Being a Jewish band didn’t used to come with security concerns. Now it does.

And not quietly. Not occasionally. Constantly.

Meet Golem: A Jewish Band That Hasn’t Changed

Golem is a New York City–based klezmer-rock band that’s been performing for more than 20 years. They’ve played everywhere: rock clubs, festivals, private events across the U.S., Europe, and Mexico.

Their music hasn’t changed.

Their identity hasn’t changed.

But the world around them has.

What Changed After October 7

On October 7, 2023, Golem was traveling to a wedding gig in Florida when the news broke.

They performed anyway.

Holding both the joy of the wedding and the shock of what was unfolding, they played “Yerushalayim shel Zahav.” The room went quiet. Then people stood. Then they applauded.

A moment of unity. Of grief. Of pride.

That moment now feels harder to come by.

Jewish Musicians Are Now Facing Security Threats

A month later, in Paris, the band performed at a festival under armed security. Guards stood outside and inside the venue.

They were told not to mention Israel publicly.

When they played “Am Yisrael Chai,” the crowd sang along. But cautiously.

That’s the shift.

Not silence. But fear creeping in around the edges.

The Cost of Speaking Up as a Jewish Artist

Since October 7, Golem has:

  • Lost followers for posting a yellow ribbon in support of hostages
  • Struggled to find opening acts that won’t bring anti-Israel messaging onto the stage
  • Had to think about safety in ways they never had to before

This isn’t about politics.

It’s about what happens when being visibly, unapologetically Jewish becomes a liability.

Why Supporting Jewish Voices Matters Right Now

The other side doesn’t win because they’re louder.

They win when people go quiet.

When Jewish voices get smaller.
When support disappears.
When people decide it’s easier not to engage.

That’s how culture shifts. Not all at once. But slowly. Quietly.

Until something vibrant becomes something invisible. This is exactly how modern antisemitism operates—often subtle, often disguised.

Support Golem and Proud Jewish Voices

Golem is still doing what they’ve always done: making music, showing up, and being proudly Jewish.

You can:

  • Book them for a private event/wedding
  • Listen to their music
  • Send a message of support
  • Follow them on Instagram @golemrocks
  • Support other Israeli creators and businesses through our Made in Israel shop, a curated collection of products that directly supports Israeli makers and helps keep their work, culture, and livelihoods visible

Want to Do More? Start Here

If this story makes you want to show up, there are real ways to do it.

With so many options out there—Jewish camps, Shabbat dinners, free kids’ books, even Shabbat on the beach—it can be hard to know where to start. That’s exactly why we created our Other Jewish Organizations page.

It’s a curated guide to the groups actually making an impact, so you can cut through the noise and find what matters—whether you’re looking for community, family resources, food, Shabbat experiences, or all of the above.

Because support doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

It just has to be real.
